Wood consists of sapwood and heartwood. Sapwood is the outermost layer of the tree, just under the bark. It forms the living part of the trunk and serves to conduct water and store nutrients. Heartwood is the inner wood of the tree. Sapwood gradually transforms into heartwood as the tree continues to grow. The boundary between sapwood and heartwood varies between different species but in oak it is generally between the 10th and 40th year.
To obtain an accurate, uninterrupted series of measurements of the ring widths, a magnifying glass with an integrated scale can be used to measure panel edges which must be clean perhaps shaved for optimal reading of the rings. If you know when the tree was planted and the age of the tree at the time of planting, obviously, you can easily and accurately determine its age. Most trees are between 5 — 10 years when they come out of the nursery. The second most accurate way to estimate tree age is to count the annual rings of wood growth.
Annual rings can be counted using two different methods. You can extract a core from the live tree using an increment borer, which can leave wounds in the tree. Or, dead trees and trees which have been removed enable ring counting on the stump. Although counting rings provides an accurate estimate of age, most people do not have access to an increment borer for live trees or the tree must be cut down. By following these easy steps, you can get a rough estimate of a live, standing trees age, without knowing when the tree was planted and without injuring or cutting the tree down.

Many years ago, the Arderne Gardens were declared a National Historical Monument in , as attested to by the plaque at the entrance to the garden. More recently, since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry introduced into law in South Africa the notion of Champion Trees , some of the individual trees have received national recognition and protection.
The main criteria applied in determining Champion status are the biological attributes, the age of the tree and its heritage significance. Six of the trees in the Arderne Gardens are officially recognised as Champion Trees. A map of the garden identifies their location and presents a lovely walk if one follows the numbered sequence of the trees.

Remember the no prune dates of April 15 — July 15 to reduce the chance of oak wilt infection and spread. Oak wilt was first recognized as an important disease in in Wisconsin, where in localized areas, over half the oaks had been killed. The fungal pathogen was thought to be native to the eastern United States. Recent evidence suggests oak wilt is an exotic disease that arrived in the United States in the early s. The fungus has not been reported in any other country other than the United States, however, so its origin remains unknown.
In Michigan, oak wilt was first reported in the s. In the United States, oak wilt has been confirmed in 24 states. Oak wilt is a serious disease that can cause relatively rapid mortality of trees in the red oak group oaks with pointed leaf margins. Trees in the white oak group oaks with rounded leaf margins can also be affected but the disease progresses much more slowly in white oaks than in red oaks. White oaks are somewhat more resistant than red oaks because they can compartmentalize the fungus while maintaining a functioning water transport system.
Activities that wound trees, such as pruning, climbing spikes, nailing signs on trees, hanging lanterns on trees or storm damage during the warmer months of the year can result in more new tree infections. Mortality of red oaks in landscapes can lead to substantial costs for removal and high mortality in forested areas can affect entire ecosystems.
Over the last two years, we have conducted research to identify the relatively high-risk period of overland spread of oak wilt in Michigan.
